Assemblymember Chris Ward Issues Statement on State Auditor's Report on Deaths in San Diego County Jails

For immediate release:

(SACRAMENTO, CA) — “Today’s report from the California State Auditor’s Office confirms what many in the community have inferred and raised concerns about,” said Assemblymember Chris Ward (D-San Diego). “Deaths in San Diego County jails are demonstrably higher than the rates of other jails throughout the state, and I’m alarmed that we have more than twice the number of deaths than Orange and Sacramento counties. Comparing the average daily populations, the death rates in San Diego County jails are one-and-a-half times higher than Los Angeles County.”

“This report shines a light on the systemic failures that are contributing to this unacceptable outcome. It’s clear that there is a need for direct guidance on improving the mental health resources within the jail and support for the Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board to be able to provide effective oversight.”

“I will be working with my colleagues in the Legislature on this issue, including evaluating the Sheriff's response to the investigation, to find the best course of action to implement the recommendations of the State Auditor.”
