Gun and Ammo Sales Prohibited at Del Mar Fairgrounds Starting 2021, Governor Newsom Heeds Calls from Local Cities

SACRAMENTO, CA – In a stunning defeat to the NRA and the gun lobby, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law today legislation by California State Asssemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) that will officially prohibit the sale of guns and ammunition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds starting in 2021. This marks the first time the State has acted to prohibit the sale of weapons and ammunition at state-owned property via statute.

Today, our message is clear: in California, we value people over guns and the safety of our communities over ammunition,” said Assemblymember Todd Gloria. “This is evidenced in the fact that the community spoke and the State listened – and now it will be illegal to sell guns or ammunition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds starting in 2021. This victory is policy and action, not thoughts and prayers – and it demonstrates that California, with leaders like Governor Newsom, will step up when the federal government fails to act.”

Assembly Bill 893 (AB 893), signed by the Governor in Sacramento today, prohibits the sale of guns or ammunition anywhere on the Del Mar Fairgrounds property starting in 2021. Violation of this prohibition would be punishable by a misdemeanor. Although there have been previous attempts, the signing of AB 893 marks the first time gun and ammunition sales have been prohibited in statute.

“The grassroots volunteers behind NeverAgainCA thank Governor Newsom for his bold leadership and commitment to end gun violence,” said Rose Ann Sharp, Co-founder of NeverAgainCA. “California should never put the sale of firearms and ammunition on state-owned property above the lives of its citizens.  We are thankful for leaders like Governor Newsom and Assemblymember Todd Gloria, who put the needs of their constituents ahead of special interests.”

Throughout the legislative process, the bill received heavy opposition from the gun lobby with the NRA, Gun Owners of California, and the California Rifle and Pistol Association all registered in opposition. The NRA has actively been encouraging its members to “Act Now.” The signing of AB 893 marks Assemblymember Gloria’s second victory against the NRA and the gun lobby. Last year, former Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Assemblymember Gloria’s bill, AB 2103, to regulate concealed carry in California.

AB 893 is co-authored by San Diego-area Assemblywomen Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) and Tasha Boerner Horvath (D-Encinitas).
