Gloria: Community Choice is the Right Choice for San Diego
Gloria, Original Author of San Diego’s Climate Action Plan, Praises City and Mayor’s Commitment to Establish Community Choice Energy
SAN DIEGO, CA – Following San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer’s announcement today that the City of San Diego will move forward with establishing and implementing a community choice energy program, California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), the original author of San Diego’s Climate Action Plan, issued this statement:
“Today is a landmark day for San Diego, and a day in which we take a major step toward ensuring a clean and safe future for our children and grandchildren.
“Climate change is an existential threat to humanity. We see its effects around us every single day. By establishing community choice in San Diego, we will offer our residents a cleaner and cost-effective way to power their homes and keep faith with our climate commitments.
“Every San Diegan deserves choice in the energy market. Every San Diegan deserves access to 100 percent clean energy instead of dirty fossil fuels. Community choice makes that possible and is the right choice for San Diego.”
Assemblymember Gloria originally authored San Diego’s Climate Action Plan in 2013 during his service as Interim Mayor. The plan calls for the city to operate on 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. Community choice energy will allow the city, rather than an investor-owned utility, to purchase and provide cleaner power for its residents.
