Assemblymember Todd Gloria’s Statement on Signing of ’17-’18 Budget by Governor Jerry Brown
Gloria’s $10 Million Budget Request for Homeless Youth Services Solidified in State Budget with Governor’s Signature
SACRAMENTO, CA – Following Governor Jerry Brown’s signing of the 2017-2018 California State Budget today, California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) issued this statement:
“With Governor Brown’s signature on the 2017-2018 budget, we set a path of progress for the next year that will benefit all Californians. This balanced and on-time budget that was approved with a bipartisan vote supports working families, promotes affordable and accessible public education, and invests in our infrastructure.
“I am most proud that California will dramatically increase its investment in homeless youth services this year and my request for $10 million dedicated specifically for homeless youth is now law. We know the rate of homeless youth is rising across California, and this year we will do something about it by providing a path off the street and into housing. If budgets are statements of values, then this allocation signals our commitment to our youth and implementing proven solutions for homelessness.”
Prior to Assemblymember Gloria’s efforts to have homeless youth services funding included in the state budget, there were no plans to allocate additional funding for this purpose this year. Statewide, the number of homeless youth has increased by seven percent. In San Diego County, the latest Point-In-Time Count shows the homeless youth rate increased by approximately 39 percent.
