Assemblymember Todd Gloria Comments on U.S. Supreme Court’s Masterpiece Cakeshop Decision

SACRAMENTO, CA – California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), a member of the California LGBT Legislative Caucus, issued the following statement on the United States Supreme Court’s ruling today in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission:

“While our beliefs may differ, all of us can agree that discrimination is wrong. No person should be refused service or turned away just because of who they are.

“In this country, we’ve long upheld the belief that when businesses open their doors to the public, they open their doors to all people. Though the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the Colorado Commission’s original decision, today’s ruling does not alter our country’s long-standing pledge of equal opportunity – liberty and justice for all – and that states can act to protect LGBT people from discrimination.

“We must remember that our communities are strongest and at their best when all people are treated fairly and equally under the law. Our message must always be that our cities, communities, and neighborhoods are places for everyone.”
