Assemblymember Gloria Reacts to Governor’s Issuance of Statewide Order Halting Evictions Amid COVID-19
Newsom Puts in Place Statewide Moratorium on Evictions Just Days After Advocacy from Assemblymember Gloria, Colleagues
SAN DIEGO, CA – Just days after California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) signed a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom calling for a statewide moratorium on evictions, the Governor today issued an executive order halting evictions statewide for renters impacted by the pandemic.
Following the Governor’s issuance of the executive order, Assemblymember Gloria issued this statement:
“I applaud Governor Newsom for taking this necessary action to protect renters as we deal with this public health crisis. Our top priority must continue to be the health, welfare, and safety of all Californians and putting people out of their homes right now because of an inability to pay puts that at-risk.
“With these protections for renters now in place, I believe it is imperative we provide similar protections for landlords. No one is immune from the impacts of COVID-19, and no one should face eviction, foreclosure, or economic ruin because of this crisis. We are all in this together, and together, we must make sure all of us can return to normalcy once we get through this.”
The Governor’s executive order goes into effect immediately and applies through May 31, 2020. The full order can be found here.
