State Assembly Honors Chairman of San Diego County’s United Veterans Council in California State Capitol
SACRAMENTO, CA – As part of the California State Legislature’s annual recognition of exceptional state veterans, California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) announced today his selection of Ret. United States Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Jack Harkins as the Veteran of the Year for the 78th Assembly District.
“Jack Harkins is a great American who nobly served our country for 35 years. After his service, he returned to San Diego to become an active part of our community and a staunch advocate for our veterans,” said Assemblymember Todd Gloria. “Because of the tireless advocacy of Jack and other local veterans, our military town is better equipped to respond to the needs of those who have served and those currently serving. It is my honor to name Jack the 78th Assembly District’s Veteran of the Year.”
Jack Harkins is a retired Marine Officer who served for 35 years in the United States Marine Corps. He served two combat tours in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968 and then Somalia in 1993. From 1995 to 1997, Jack commanded Marine Wing Support Squadron 373.
In May 2001, Jack retired as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Installations and Logistics for the Marine Corps air bases in the western area. In this capacity, Jack is widely credited with designating the MCAS Miramar Veterans Cemetery, which eventually became the Miramar National Cemetery.
Currently, Jack serves as the Chairman of the United Veterans Council of San Diego County – a position he had held since 2012. He is the founder of Veterans Week San Diego and the San Diego Veterans Day Parade. Jack also sits on the Defense, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and is the Chairman of the Veterans Museum of Balboa Park. Jack is a resident of North Park.
As part of today’s Veteran of the Year festivities, Assemblymember Gloria hosted Jack in the Capitol and presented him with a resolution from the California State Legislature honoring his service. Assemblymember Gloria and Jack also took part in a Veteran of the Year luncheon with other veteran honorees from across the State. Jack wife, Kay, accompanied him in the Capitol today.
