Assemblymember Gloria Issues Statement on State Senate’s Passage of SB 2: Building Homes & Jobs Act
Gloria, Co-Author of SB 2, Applauds Senator Atkins, Looks Forward to Securing Bill’s Passage in State Assembly
SACRAMENTO, CA – Following the California State Senate’s passage of SB 2 -- the Building Homes and Jobs Act – which would create a permanent source of funding for affordable housing, California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) issued this statement:
“Few have championed the cause of affordable housing for longer or with more passion than Senator Toni Atkins. Her effective leadership on this issue is on full display today with the state Senate's passage of her bill SB 2.
“There is no more urgent problem facing California today than the need for affordable housing. We must increase funding for construction of subsidized housing, streamline approval processes for workforce housing and hold cities accountable for their fair share of housing production at all income levels. Senator Atkins' SB 2 is a critical part of a comprehensive housing package that could meaningfully improve the lives of those struggling to make ends meet.
“I look forward to helping to lead my Assembly colleagues to also pass Senator Atkins' bill and send it to the Governor for his signature this year.”
SB 2, authored by State Senator Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), would create a new source of funding for affordable housing using a modest fee on certain real estate documents, excluding those documents for sales of residential and commercial property. According to her office, SB 2 would generate roughly $250 million each year for the production and renovation of affordable housing. Assemblymember Gloria serves as a co-author of SB 2.
