Assemblymember Gloria Names Normal Heights’ Mariposa Ice Cream as Small Business of the Year
Gloria Honors Family-Owned San Diego Business at Ceremony in State Capitol for California Small Business Day
SACRAMENTO, CA – As part of California’s Small Business Day, California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) announced today the selection of Mariposa Homemade Ice Cream as the 2017 Small Business of the Year for the 78th Assembly District.
“Mariposa Homemade Ice Cream is a staple of 78th Assembly District, and a cornerstone of Adams Avenue,” said Assemblymember Todd Gloria. “Mariposa not only serves some of the best ice cream around, but it cultivates a one-of-a-kind spirit of community in its store with the unique ability to bring neighbors together even if you don’t have a sweet tooth. That is due in no small part to its owners, Anna and her late-husband Dick. I am proud Mariposa is in the 78th Assembly District and it is my honor to name it as the Small Business of the Year.”
Mariposa Homemade Ice Cream opened on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights in the summer of 2000 by Dick and Anna Van Ransom-Magaña. A fourth generation Dutch dairy farmer from New York, Dick learned how to make homemade ice cream using fresh ingredients from his grandfather. Today, Mariposa still uses an old-fashioned batch freezer designed to exactly duplicate the hand-cranked churning process.
Mariposa has received several awards for Best Ice Cream and is featured in the New York Times as a top place to visit in San Diego.
For today’s Small Business of the Year recognition ceremony, Anna Van Ransom-Magaña and her nephew, Tim Rose, from Mariposa were recognized on the Assembly Floor by Assemblymember Gloria and presented with a proclamation from the California State Assembly. California’s Small Business Day in the Capitol is hosted by the California Small Business Association.
On Friday, June 16, 2017, Assemblymember Gloria will join Mariposa for a community celebration of their Small Business of the Year recognition starting at 6:30 PM. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
